There were some minor improvements in the design from the original 850, including better handling and an uprated specification, but otherwise this was the same car. As already mentioned, Volvo introduced the Coupé and Convertible ranges as the Volvo C70. The convertible outlasted the original car and remained on sale until 2005. In 2000 (2001 for North America), Volvo released the all new V70 (together with S60 sedan variant) based on the new P2 platform that had already been employed as the Volvo S80 sedan in 1998.

Volvo S60 is a entry-level luxury car / compact executive car built by Volvo that was first introduced in 2000. It uses the Volvo P2 platform, which is shared with the Volvo V70, Volvo S80 and Volvo XC90. It was one of the first "curvy Volvos" designed by Peter Horbury and appropriately used the tagline "Revolvolution" in its advertising campaign. The model was refreshed in 2004.

The S80 is based on the Volvo P2 platform. The 1999 S80 were availible with five different engines - a 2,4 litre 140hp 5 cylinder, a 2,4 litre 170hp 5 cylinder, a 2,9 litre 204hp 6 cylinder, the 272hp T6 and the 2,5 litre D5. The 2.9 has a 2.9 L I6 engine while the T6 was powered by a twin-turbocharged 2.8 L I6. The 2001 model saw the introduction of the 200hp 2,5T. For the 2004 model year, the S80 came in 2.4 (140/170), 2.4D, D5, 2.5T, 2.5T AWD, 2.9, T6 and Bi-Fuel models. The 2.5T model has a 2.5 L I5 engine with a light-pressure turbocharger. The AWD version, of course, has all wheel drive. Prices for the S80 range from $36,000 USD for a base 2.5T, to $50,000 USD for a fully-loaded T6 model. Every single S80 has been built in the Gothenburg, Sweden plant. The very first Volvo S80 rolled off the assembly line on May 6, 1998. King Harald V of Norway uses a S80 Limousine as a representation vehicle. 368 000 S80s were built before the introduction of the new model.

Volvo's near-luxury sedan is available with all-wheel drive for 2002. The S60 is essentially the sedan version of Volvo's better-selling V70 station wagon, and both share a basic structure and some features with Volvo's S80 flagship. All S60s use an inline 5-cyl engine. The base 2.4-liter model, the more-powerful turbo 2.4T, and the sporty turbo 2.3-liter T5 all have front-wheel drive. The new 2.4T AWD apportions power to the rear wheels when the front tires begin to slip. Base and T5 models offer manual transmission or an optional 5-speed automatic. The 2.4Ts come only with automatic. Front side airbags, curtain side airbags, and antilock 4-wheel disc brakes are standard. The base model has 15-inch wheels and offers optional 16s. The 2.4Ts have 16s and offer 17s. The T5 comes with 17s. Traction control is standard on all S60s and an antiskid system is standard on the T5, optional for the 2.4T models. Optional on all is a navigation system with pop-up dashboard screen.

Built for the eye. That is why the forward-thinking Volvo Safety Concept Car is built for the eye. Not merely in terms of aesthetic appearances and lines pleasing to the eye, but rather because the car has been designed around the driver's eye to ensure better vision and visibility.
